Koh Samui, the island of the coconut trees, is the third largest Thai island and only Phuket and Koh Chang are bigger. Sheltered in the Gulf of Siam Koh Samui's clear blue sea, the island and its long sandy beaches remained unaffected by the Indian Ocean Tsunami which struck Thailand's Andaman Coast in December 2004. The island is about 247 square km's and it is located 700 km south of Bangkok.

Koh Samui offers medical services of international standards. Main Hospitals in Koh Samui are:
Samui International HospitalSamui International Hospital (North end of Chaweng): +66 (0) 77 422 272 - www.sih.co.th

The officers of the Thai Tourist Police are there to assure your visit is as safe and pleasant as possible. Tourist Police stations are located in the major tourist areas of the island. In Chaweng the police office is located in the middle of the main street. Most tourist police speak English and a few will speak Japanese or European languages. If you become involved in a dispute during your stay and do not feel you are being treated fairly, hold your ground (with a smile!) and call for the Tourist Police (+66 077 421 281). That, in many cases, will be enough to resolve the issue. The tourist police are very familiar with all the local scams and the operators who run them.
There are several banks on Koh Samui which accept all major currencies, travelers cheques and credit cards. All offer ATM service which accept local bank cards as well as most international credit cards.
